BREAKING: Sri Lanka’s government elects new president in parliament

Following a vote in Parliament, Ranil Wickremesinghe was chosen to serve as the new president of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka.

134 people voted for him.

Anura Kumara: 3 Dullas Alahapperuma: 82

There were 223 votes cast by lawmakers. Two MPs chose not to vote. There were 219 legitimate votes and four ballots that were deemed invalid.

First time in Sri Lankan history, a vote in Parliament was held to choose a new president to fill the position left vacant by Gotabaya Rajapaksa's resignation on July 14, 2022.

Despite the fact that Sri Lanka's parliament has already chosen a president once, this election is unique.

When former President Ranasinghe Premadasa passed away in 1993, D.B. Wijetunga was unanimously chosen to complete the remainder of his or her term as president without a vote.

But this time, a survey was conducted because multiple contenders had entered the race. As a result, it will be noted as a first in this nation's parliamentary history.

Following the resignation of the previous president, Gotabaya Rajapaksa, three names of lawmakers were put out and supported in the Parliament yesterday (19).

As a result, the names of the acting president Ranil Wickremesinghe, Dullas Alahapperuma, and Anura Kumara Dissanayake were suggested.
