Transportation costs will rise in the upcoming week - GPRTU announce

The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has warned commuters to prepare for increased transportation costs in the upcoming week.

The transportation union claimed that the ongoing increase in petroleum products is the cause of the rising prices.

It also said that the current economic climate makes their problems as transportation providers much worse, necessitating a corresponding hike in fares.

According to a statement seen by GhanaWeb, "Petroleum and spare part prices keep rising day in and day out along with other irksome charges."

Currently, the majority of gas stations charge GHC11.49 for a litre of gasoline.

The union stated in their statement, "We are inviting the general public to collaborate with us when they see an increment on tickets as have been discussed with relevant stakeholders," though they did not specify by what percentage the costs are expected to go up.

The drivers' union further stated that it will oppose any attempt by the government to restart tollbooth operations in Ghana.

"As suggested by our inside source, we are also warning the administration not to resume tollbooth operations. Any attempt by the government to start the tollbooth operation will be met with resistance from us.

Following its inclusion in the 2022 budget, Minister of Highways and Roads Akwasi Amoako-Atta issued an order to stop collecting road tolls.
