Wimbledon 2022: Djokovic claims his 21st Grand Slam Title after Kyrgios defeat

Novak Djokovic has won his seventh Wimbledon Championship Title after defeating Nick Kyrgios on Sunday, 10 July 2022 in the men single final.

Djokovic defended his title in four sets, winning 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 (3).

The Serbian who also won the tournament in 2018, 2019 and 2021, took control of the final as Kyrgios began to unravel in the third set, asking for a "drunk" woman in the crowd, whom he claimed was calling out to him during play.

Djokovic, who won the three previous tournaments at SW19, remained calm as his Australian opponent shouted at his team and the umpire.

The 35-year-old, whose status for the US Open is unclear due to his refusal to be vaccinated for COVID-19, was in danger of going a calendar year without a major victory for the first time since 2017. He was not allowed to play in the Australian Open and was deported from the country due to his unvaccinated status, then lost in the French Open quarterfinals to Rafael Nadal.

The victory on grass puts him one major behind Nadal on the all-time list, and one ahead of Roger Federer, who is aiming to return from injury in the fall.

Collecting the runners-up trophy from the Duchess of Cambridge, Kyrgios said: "He's a bit of a god. I thought I played well.

"To all the ball kids, umpires - I know we have a tough relationship - thank you for putting up with me. And the crowd have been amazing," Kyrgios added.

The last fortnight has been a rollercoaster ride for the 27 year-old, which has also brought the news he is facing a charge for assaulting his former girlfriend.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and their son Prince George were among those in the crowd on Centre Court.

He was then asked if he had got taste for more grand slam finals, Kyrgios said: "Absolutely not, I'm so tired.

"Myself and my team are all exhausted. I need a well-earned vacation. I'm really happy with this result, the best of my career. Maybe one day I'll be back."

Djokovic has now won seven of the last 11 titles at the All England Club, equalling Pete Sampras' tally, and falling just one short of Roger Federer's men's singles record here and Rafael Nadal's overall mark.
